Tell us how it aligns with aspects of the job postings you selected. Include a link to your folder so we can respond.
Reply to at least two others’ by Tuesday.

2/
Studio:

  1. Create a document in either Indesign, Google Slides, or Powerpoint to build your portfolio presentation. Your portfolio will be viewable online and also exist in PDF format.
  2. Working from the job postings you select (or new ones if you wish to update that research) respond to what is listed via your portfolio presentation. Select five (5) projects to highlight.
  3. Last week you prepared this text:

When it came to structuring my portfolio I wanted to showcase the design work I have done for other companies and prove how well I work with branding. The jobs I am applying for are in the sports / esports field so normally they are looking for someone who at least knows what is the Creative Cloud and understanding how to build upon an existing brand. The projects I shared show my range between print and digital along with my skills in logo, graphics, and banners. Due to some of my pieces being horizontal and others vertical I purposefully made the layouts unique to each situation to ensure that it can take up half of the slide space either way. My layouts were half-half, enough space for all of the descriptions in one-half. Lastly, the font I used was a san-serif because they are more easier to read even at a smaller scale and bolded the names of the projects to state a main title.

Hi Gerardo! I like the way you used formatting on the pages to display the different artwork along with how you did the text next to it. I also like these of color in it since most of these are just white to keep it simple. I can definitely see how it fits into a gaming theme for the job.

      Hi Gerardo,
I think you did a good job in your choices for the portfolio and I think that they really back up your wide range in skills.

I selected the Concept Artist (2D Environment/Background Designer) position posted by the Childhood Cancer Society in Greensboro, NC. I decided that out of the 3 this one seemed the most accessible to me with the skillset and body of work I have now. The job requires a knowledge in design principles. Mood, tone, perspective, lighting and value seem to be highly important to the potential employer. Proficiency in digital software is greatly desired, and the listed options are all familiar to me; especially procreate and photoshop. In the work I chose to feature in my portfolio, I included examples of traditional and digital media, to show fluency in both formats. I picked out works that featured complex backgrounds that were either hand-drawn by me or implemented and edited with software. Each of my examples have a brief narrative included, to contextualize the pieces and showcase my ability to visually storytell. Additionally, many examples from my body of work center around themes of childhood, which I believe adds a level of relatability to the specific organization.

Hey Kayla! I like that you added a photo of yourself on your first page it makes it feel personalized. And I see the childhood theme in the first 3 artworks that you show on the portfolio. My only suggestion is the typeface different fonts for your title of “Kayla Stile” in a bolder font with “portfolio” in a different font looks a little odd but if that was intentional then go for it.

      Hey Kayla!

I really enjoy the setup you’ve used for this and the way you’ve designed the layout of your portfolio. The sleek, modern design complements your work, highlighting it and keeping the primary focus on your lovely artwork. The brief narrative really helps the reader understand the concept behind each piece! Wonderful work!

      Hi Kayla,
I really like the layout of your portfolio; it looks very professional and I think the your biography is very well written.

For the portfolio slides, I started with the main page with my name and contact and a short bio. The 5 pages after that are all artwork, they all have a page number on them but on the slides they automatically add the date of when you edited it at the bottom and I could not for the life of me figure out how to get rid of it. I am basing the work that I put in here off of the UI UX design job from last week. On the second page, the artwork I include is from a website built for DND that we focused on UX to create, I have this one first since it relates to the job the most. The next page is a frame animation which is my favorite work that I have made. Next is an animation that starts of with the moon and it has other circles through it as it changes pictures. After that is a link to a pdf which has 26 pages of a zine booklet layout I did for a job. And the last one is a link to p5js which I coded an interactable card in that I think also relates to this job so I added it at the end to keep it fresh in the viewer’s mind. Since I only had two works that really related to this I included it at the beginning and at the end so their first impression is of me doing something UX related while it ends with something coded which relates.

I tried to focus on almost purely designs and graphics done in Photoshop and Illustrator for my image selections as those fit with the 2 of the jobs I had chosen to highlight. I was going to include either footage or images of the game I had created for my Unreal Engine class but it wasn’t done at the time so I would probably add that in later. I also added a bio/ title slide at the beginning and kept it short and focused on what relevant experience I have at the moment and what my passion is.

With my portfolio, in trying to format it so it shows who I truly am and what I am applying for, I wanted to include mostly the projects that I have made within online apps like Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, etc. since most likely that is the kind of job I would most likely want. I feel there is more freedom and creativity in making projects online and since I have perfected my craft with those apps, I feel that it would be the best step in the right direction. Especially when in this day and age, jobs rely so much on online components that I feel it is very necessary to showcase these skills in a potential job interview. I also chose the projects that would be the best at showing the wide creativity that I have when it comes to creating certain ideas. I did also add some drawings to the portfolio to show my potential I have with just a pencil and paper so that job positions know that I am capable of making both works. A new media design job position is most likely the anticipated direction I want to go in but it just depends on what they are looking for.

I am structuring my portfolio through Canva because some interesting elements caught my eye, such as the mail and instagram icons. I organized it with the first page featuring my name and the title “Design Portfolio” to attract potential graphic design jobs, which were all three positions I selected. Then, on the same page, I have listed my contacts, allowing my employer to easily reach me and review any additional artwork I have completed. The next page includes a bio that highlights my achievements and skills, as well as my current college status and extra skills, such as compassion and kindness, which are essential for leadership or coworker roles.

I’m highlighting five works that represent me as an artist and showcase the diversity of my design skills. These include pieces made traditionally, scanned electronically, and converted to online platforms. Additionally, it should be simpler and include many text and typographical rules attached that only a skilled designer would recognize, including mistakes and other issues with the manuscript or book. The diversity of showcasing a motion graphics piece to represent design is more than stagnant. The choice of blue, black, and white was intended to create a sleek look, while also incorporating the inviting and calming colors of blue. Additionally, employers can easily read what is visible and avoid being too distracted by excessive elements, ornaments, or conflicting imagery. I want to focus on the pieces presented and gain a clear understanding of who I am.

My portfolio tells my story through the majority of illustration, starting with static designs, then motion poster design, illustrations, and coding work (p5.js). I wanted to show I’m not just a designer who can make pretty things, but someone who understands how to bring designs to life through motion and code.
I kept my typography clean and simple for the poster design, using the typeface PRINT, and it created a consistent thread that ties everything together. I feel like by doing this, you can consistently kind of create an idea for who’s work it is.
For colors, I went on a maximalist mindset. I was trying to push color throughout every piece I made. Majority of the art I create is based on mostly blacks, whites, and grays with occasional splashes of color to create an accent in the piece. (similar to the album/vinyl design). I just wanted to step out of my comfort zone by using the majority color and a splash of white to grayscale.
I chose art that showcases skills mentioned in the job postings: motion posters demonstrate my animation abilities for the “animated content/motion design/video editing” requirement, while my coding examples highlight the “front-end development experience” needed for the UI/UX design. I still need to create work for my portfolio relating to the last job listing.
I personally feel like I need to add more to the portfolio, right now, I feel like it is just the basics of graphic design.

      Hey Jayla,

I love the way you have organized your layout for portfolio, it gives me some ideas to contribute to my own layout. I enjoy the simplicity of it having it mainly focus on your pieces and the use of mockup is inspiring as well! Brillaint work!
